Just confirmed it's a problem with a filter in my solar scope, will need to either clean it or get a replacement. I suppose I have no excuse for not fixing it (or attempting to) at the moment, having some time on my hands!
Sorry to hear that Jonathon. Hope Lunt can help you out.

I think the main problem is the seeing conditions. Only when it is good can I get up to near 200x using using a SW ST 102 mm scope. Of course using my ED 120 makes things much easier.

I had a look using my Lunt 60 but they seemed very faint, perhaps my contrast is out as I seem to have a very red background in the eyepiece.
The proms were quite clear here. The seeing was really good and I think this might have made the difference.

Hello and a warm welcome to the SGL.

Congratulations on a successful first light with your Ha scope. We had clear skies here all day so I managed a good session with my Lunt scope. Unfortunately the seeing was not great, but better than nothing. The prom you saw was very active throughout the day and provided a good start for you. I does take a little time and practice to get your eye in. There were a couple of other proms visible but the were small and not spectacular. With the Lunt scope I sometimes have to change the pressure settings of the etalon to get good views of the surface details. To be honest the was very little showing on the surface today. When there are some good filaments or active regionals it will be easier to get your eye in.

I have seen similar ones before.... I think. I let others ponder on it.

Hello and a warm welcome to the SGL.
Just to add to Ed’s advice, remember to remove any finder you have on the scope and never leave it unattended, especially if there are kids about.

Nice shot Charl. I watched that prom From11 until 5 pm and it was certainly starting to break up by the end of the session. Cloudy here at the moment but the forecast is for it to clear soon. Let’s hope so.

Thanks for the heads up. As soon as the sky cleared I set up. The hedge grow is quite spectacular.

Just back in from looking at these Charl. Very nice indeed.

I certainly can see it using my ED 120 at magnifications of 180 x and over. The seeing has to be good and it is more obvious towards the centre of the disk. You have to be patient when observing and focus is critical. Often it seems to come and go as the seeing changes.

Thanks for that full and very interesting post regarding your observations in WL. Recently I have been tending to concentrate mainly on Ha observing but before I had the Lunt scope my experiences were much like your own. Seeing the fine detail of granulation does take time, dedication and experience but is well worth the effort. In my case I found that using a solar continuum filter was essential. I just could not get the same results with a polarising filter.
Thanks again Stu for reminding me of what I have been missing and I will set up both scopes from now on.John
