There can also be a subjective element for diffraction spikes, and that's the state of the observer's eyesight.
Some observers stretch wires across the front of their refractors to mimic the spikes produced by 'scopes with central obstructions. They regard the spikes as being aesthetically pleasing, but not to Yours Truly.

I've seen the white dwarf in the Omicron 2 Eri system in a 60mm refractor, especially with averted vision. It takes about 240 years for the white dwarf to orbit the primary. The red dwarf ( not visible in the 60mm 'scope ) takes 8000 years to orbit.

What's needed now is a dew/glare shield about a foot long. A rolled up camping map works well and there's no weight penalty.

Camping mat is great material for dew shades, especially as there's no weight penalty. Do we take it that you'll be lining your's with some absorbent matt-black material?
