Andy. Hello and welcome to SGL
Lots of things can affect ur ep choice. ( on tablet so xcuz abrviatns) Do u wear glsses? This can be an issue but usually not. What r u intendin viewin? Planets, dso, nebulas, gslaxies?
If its alsorts, I think 4 ep, s will cover the bases. (I know I have more as do most others but for a starter 4 will do the job)
yes I think a 6mm woulf b fine as ur highest ep. The sw uw 6mm at £30 might be a reasonable option on your F8.3 scope, i have not got ond bug for cost it would b a great starter. The 25 that comes with it wil be perfect and imo are half decent as a starter. Then another higher mag ep at 8mm for when the 6mm isnt doing the job with a mid range one at 12 to 14.
x40 for the 25. 83 to 71 for the 12 or 14 and 8/125 or 6/166
hope this makes sense
Seriously you can soon waste a fortune on bits though, so take your time and adk a load more and deliborate b4 you buy,

I see where you are ciming from. A 6mm woukd give you 200x so yes, that would be a good sized ep to have.
I have 2 eps that take me above 200x, as it is poss7ble on very vgood seeing occasions to go higher. However its just a shame they dont come around that often.
-
Elmo, yku need to be more specific please. F6 ok, what aperture is your scope but what do you mean in reference to 8mm plus barlow
-
I have had ep, s from stock to the top echelon. I love my ep's now. However as Nigele2 has stated, diffdrence between stock and mid range is huge, between mid and top end is minimal.
For what its worth, I think the very best eps on a £4viewing experience is the celestron x-cel range. £60 bjys you fab bit of kit for people on a budget.

Planetgazer. The Ethos have a field of view of 100 degree, that will give you a huge apparent field of view. The delos on the other hand have a fov of 72. For that they are only half the price of the Ethos but at £250 they are still a veryvbig spend. Not for a beginner to be honest.May I ask why ethos? Im in the same postion, and would like to know mote about EPs

Staraddict. As already mentioned, fully extend the scope otherwise you wontvget focus. Next ude the largest eyepiece you have, should be either a 25 or 20mm. Now get used to using that and getting a good focus before trying to ramp up the mag, results will follow

how do you find these eyepieces zillah. I am only interested in curiosity ad Vixen have a good name and these are well priced. Btw you will notice a huge difference between your new 4 and the 30 in eye relief, thats my only thing with high mag plossl eyepieces. So many pages of EP pornography! Treated myself to a Maplins case today, as my Vixen NPL 30mm has nowhere to live. The downside of that birthday present was to highlight how naff my stock pieces are so a 4mm Vixen NPL is being ordered in the morning.
People like you all need to get help.....or, donate all your EP's to me, we'll call it therapy!!

Great post. I got a second hand WO 102 doublet f7 came with a prism and one eyepiece a 15mm plossl. I'm on a budget and have been searching for info. on what would be the best eyepieces for me too get.Your post has made things clearer at what ep's I should be looking. Thank you AlanSent from my LT30p using Tapatalk
alternatively get a fairly cheap 20mm and a cheap 2x barlow and see how yhings go. This will give you a reasonable range to start with until you find your feet and decide how u want to go in this hobby without busting the bank.

Depends what the stock eyepieces are lije warren. Some can be ok, usualy in the 20mm plus sizes, often the smaller ones can leave you wanting.
again it depends on the individual but take a little time getting used to the scope and the stock eyepieces before rushing out and spending money. Ask plenty of questions too, the only daft questions are the ones you dont ask.

Just got my dob end of last week this is an excellent guide.Mine is a 6 inch with 1200mm focal, so f/8.So I'm looking a 5mm, around 10-12 and 25mm?Should I get a Barlow? Many thanks,WarrenSent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk 2
hello roverspeed. Thimk about what a barlowed ep will give you 2x. I think a 6mm giving 200 mag is where you should draw the line but if u choose your eyepieces carefully then 3 ep, s plus a barlow will give you 6 options. How about a 30, 18 and 12, givig you barlowed 15, 9 and 6.
ld cover everything in 99% of occasions. This isnt an exact science but you can see how this would work for u and your scope.

I hope to be posting a half decent image soon which will be my first via a scope. I am just hoping my expectations are not too high on what is realistically achievable.

Top post this Qualia my man. I am still kinda new to this hobby and your posts have made me think a little more about some of my own viewing techniques and I shall be applying them next time I get behind the eyepiece.
In particular the bit about having a little more patience behind it when viewing objects to allow them time to develop instead of simply flicking from one thing to another, which I admit to being a culprit of.
Also the trying out different powered EP's to try and squeeze out a little more definition and detail as all to often its a case of "seen it, quick few minutes view and move on", (the patience thing again).

I would say a small shooting star exploding. Although you don't mentiopn seeing anything before hand other than the flash which is a little strange.
Oh and welcome to SGL too

I wish i could have 4 and make do. Would saved me a lot of money mate. But I went out on thursday evening, for just 90 minutes and managed to used all but two of those eyepieces. sigh maybe I should have just bought a good zoom

Pity about the crappy trainers in bottom of the shot CTD

+1 for celestron x-cel. I used them in a 12 dob and views through them was excellent. Also if you only want one extra wide field ep the maxivision 24mm 82degree eps come in at around £130 and that would be a great addition to top off x-cels.
http://www.firstlightoptics.com/celestron-eyepieces/celestron-x-cel-lx-eyepiece.html
The 18& 12 plus a two times barlow gives you a great range, chuck in the maxivision and u really would have a great range.

As previously mentioned I have now updated my EP collection and revamped my EP case to accept the new and complete collection, see below:
The bits top left are a 2x Celestron Ultima barlow and 35mm 2" extention tube with a superb Howie Glatter Parallizer inserted. Next to that is a variety of filters.
I also have a seperate bag that has my GOTO and other wires, mini tool kit, laser and cheshire plus other bits and bobs including a 25mm Skywatcher Plossl incase I ever need a low FOV ep for viewing certain DSO's.
The widest TFOV given of course by the Axiom is 1.69 with exit pupil at 6.2 which given my age, is the most sensible option rather than going any higher.

Yeah like I said I think I would of made a different choice had I known, a cheap version like you said astro, isnt that much of a job to collimate the things afterall
-
Factory return, blimey I hope it doesn't lose it then. Think its going to be permanently wrapped in bubble wrap from here onI don't think the mark 3 is adjustable, sure I saw that somewhere... Its a factory return for adjustment
-
I hope the title isn't misleading. I have the laser in question and I cannot figure out how to collimate it. John had the mark II version and tells me the rubber handle part wasn't the same and this was where the collimation screws were located. As far as i can tell there are no such screws anywhere.
The rubber grip appears to be non-removable. If you read the manual here http://www.telescope.../lasercolli.pdf (bottom page 3, top page 4), to me it appears to say that it does not require collimation as long as it is correctly inserted although I am a little unsure if my interpretation is correct.
Can anybody shed any light on this one please

Some nice glass on show, especially yours Tinker. Loving the Pentax. I want the collection of delos though
Still waiting for my last 2 or maybe three ep purchase before I put my final collection up for viewing

Nice write up Rae. I keep promising to go up there but I keep getting other offers and renaging on my own inner promises.
However like you on the three occasions I have been up there I have found everyone to be really helpful and the gear as you say is fantastic.
Inbox me next time you go up and i will try to get there with you, I want to try out my own scope up there but also would like to use some of the fab equipment available too.
All the best to Peter and the ret of the Tod chaps

Yeah sorry andy I was generalising when I threw in my own thoughts. I am not familiar with your model tbh so appologies, should have read your question better.
However it might be worth trying out someone elses ep's from a astronomy club or maybe you know someone who lives local. That way you can make a better and more informed choice.
