Lightest scope per inch of aperture

Recommended Posts

I have one of the small SkyWatcher AZ-Goto mounts, and I love it for grab-and-go. It came with the really rather nice 1145P parabolic Newtonian, but after viewing for so long through larger scopes the view was a little tough to get used to.

I upgraded it to an Omni XLT 127, basically a C5 SCT, and was surprised at how unstressed the mount is at 5" of aperture.

My question then, is what might be the lightest scope with the largest aperture I can load this mount with? I have heard of people fitting a C6 but that makes me a little nervous.

Any ideas?

Yeah I read between 3 and 4kg depending on who's talking...

I guess if I stick with a 1.25" mirror diagonal and eyepieces, the accessory weight can be minimised, but there can't be many decent scopes under 4kg.

I know the one you mean, the lighter one comes with the little 70mm.... it's unbearably shaky.

The 1145P comes with the same mount as the SkyMaster 127 Maksutov so I think it's the beefier one.

I'm feeling like 5" is the limit, unless someone knows of a really, really light 6" Newtonian.
