what to buy for £250

Hi I am looking for a bit of advice about what sort of beginners telescope you can buy for £250. One of my colleagues is entitled to a free gift from his work to the value of £250 for long service and he new I had a telescope and thought to ask me for advice about buying a scope ,and I immediately thought of asking you guys. He is going to be retiring to Sky so he should get some good dark skies there (when it’s not cloudy). He also said that he might like to use it during the day for land observations. For that reason I thought maybe some kind of refractor might be suitable. What do you guys think?

Hi, what will he prefer to observe at night? Moon & Planets or DSO?

mmmmm that I am not sure of but bearing in mind he is a complete beginner I think planets and the moon would be the easiest things to locate in the sky.
