Pupil Diameter

I had an eye test yesterday, and out of interest I asked the optician if she would be able to measure my pupil at maximum dilation.

The test was rather crude, involving turning off the lights for a minute or so, and using a little ruler in front of my eye, but she measured it as 8-9mm.

I was quite surprised as I thought 7mm was a normal diameter for a healthy eye. I'm quite young, at 22, so maybe it's normal to have a large pupil, and perhaps this explains why I was comfortable with a 40mm eyepiece in my 16" f/4.5 scope (8.3mm exit pupil).

Has anyone else measured their pupil?

Many years ago I set up my camera and tripod with a flash gun and took a photo of my eye with a ruler next to it. The idea is that the flash is so fast the eye can't react in time, so stays dilated.

I think (then) it was over 7mm. I would have been about late 30s.
