M109 barred spiral galaxy

M109 is a tricky target! Yes, it was easy to find, being close to Gamma UMa, and did have a mag of 9.8, but it has generally a low surface brightness that makes it difficult to define.

First impression was of a brighter bar set at an angle within an elongated area of haze between two field stars. Closer study over about an hour revealed a more extensive elliptical shaped haze. As much as I tried I could not get any definition to the spiral arms with my 12" at x150
