Newbie dummy! Polar alighnment

Recommended Posts

Now I know this is a stupid question but once I have my SW 130p Polar Aligned what do I have to do if I want to look at Orion, for instance, given that it is in the opposite side of the sky? can't seem to get my head around setting the mount to line up with Polaris and then moving it!

You don't move the mount. You unclamp the locks on the 2 axis (right ascension or RA and declination or DEC) then the scope can be moved to point anywhere in the sky while still aligned with Polaris.

This is a good guide:

Polar Alignment of your Equatorial Mount - McWiki

Edit: Sorry, I should have added that it's not a stupid question at all. Equatorial mounts take some getting used to :)
