Favourite Astro Image Ever (Amateur)

Following on from the Pro thread, post here you favourite image ever taken by an Amateur

For me, it's the July 8th 2009 APOD "The Dark River to Antares". It was taken by Jason Jennings http://cosmicphotos.com

For me there's no other image I've seen that has so much going on, a beautiful range of colours and lots of crisp dark nebulae

It proves that amateurs can compete with professionals and is something to aspire to

I got a copy of "Capturing the Stars: Astrophotography by the Masters" by Robert Gendler in the post today and I had completely forgot about his ridiculously deep image of the Orion area, ok this maybe comes a close second

Have you seen Gendler's observatory, location and kit? Does he still come under the (affordable kit) amateur category? hmmm lol

Far be it from me to blow my own trumpet, but I thik my first image of Jupiter (see the Planetary Imaging Section) is pretty darn good!

That's a good point

I suppose he's not a full time Astronomer, so he narrowly scrapes into the Amateur category. Maybe we need a "uses an ridiculously expensive remote obs in a dark sky place" category

Phil Hart has some inspiring images up on Phil Hart - Astronomy, Photography and Peak Oil , some of which taken from rural Aberdeenshire , using a canon DSLR and a GP-DX. Although he did eventually fall for a Tak tube and move back to Oz... he showed me that great astro photos were possible for mortals.
