Camcorder Conversion?

Has anyone ever had a go at converting a camcorder for astro?

Many camcorders have a threaded nose, are firewire, and just HAVE to be more sensitive than a webcam. So how about say ebaying a camcorder that is for sale very cheap as it's faulty, the fault being it doesn't record or say, for example, chews tapes but works in every other way.

Disassemble the camcorder, remove the lens, get an adaptor to convert the thread allowing the addition of a 1.25 nose and add an IR block filter, then connect it up by firewire and give it a go?

Has anyone done this?
