Bias and Flat frames

Recommended Posts

I use a starlight xpress MX916. I have been taking darks and using them when stacking images, but am not sure about the necessity of bias or flat frames, or how many of them I need to take? Do they need to be taken for ech filter I use or just one? Can I use a stored set, or do I need to take them on the night of imaging?

I'm sure Dennis (Roundycat) will be along shortly to give you the correct advice!I'm new at imaging but as far as i have figured out with help from on here to properly calibrate your light frames you need a corresponding set of Darks and Flats, but will not require Bias as this info is already contained within your Dark frames- no need to subtract it twice. as for how many you need, that is very subjective as i can tell depending on the imager. Check out a few of the recent threads on this, including my whirlpool galaxy image for more info from more knowledgeable folk! Dennis has a great primer on his website- i'll see if i can find it for you...
