Well it's much simplier version of IR-pass filter Things that don't absorb IR may look as "white" or transparent depending what are they.

Thermal imaging is more towards the microwave ... much longer than the IR which can be detected with CCD cameras (cut off is approx. 1100 nm due to binding energies in the semiconductor lattice).
