Christmas lights

Why is astro gear like christmas lights, like the lights my gear has been in the loft since the tail end of last year, so last night was its first outing - would anything work? would it heck! Guide cam and imaging cam not recognised by the pc....reload drivers! could i get an image? NO! spent most of last night trying just to get a recognisable image onto the PC...to be truthfull I was glad when the clouds came over at 4 am. 5 hours and not a thing to show for it, HOHUM
