Last Night

Hypernova

Recommended Posts

With last night clear, I decided to have a go at a few objects that I hadn't seen previously.

First up was M51, barely high enough to enable viewing and fairly easy to find, just below a couple of 8th magnitude stars. Not much to see really, probably because of local LP, two distinct cores surrounded by a small fuzz.

Finally managed to observe both M97 and M108. The Owl stood out as a small grey blob in one corner of a square made up of other stars, some variations in surface brightness visible with averted vision. M108 was tricky and I could only see it with averted vision but it was there, looked like a small cigar galaxy roughly in line with two stars above it.
