I've recently found something unexpected to be an invaluable tool - my iPhone 3G. As well as the Sky Voyager planetarium app, which has most of the features of Stellarium, it has 3G internet, which means I can sign on to stargazer's lounge, look at Wikipedia etc. The planetarium has a night vision mode, and I have another app (Flashlight) which serves as an excellent red torch. One handy extra is that you can keep yourself occupied whilst waiting for the clouds to clear! And it's also good for phoning the missus and getting her to pick me up lol. Seriously though, it's the most useful tool for this learner, and I don't know how I'd have fared without it.

I use my iPhone whilst observing too. Not only for the red flashlight, but I also use StarmapPro and Distant Suns. Both brilliant apps for showing what to look at and where.
