I'm not so sure about this being your first trip outside the solar system. Have you ever used a mobile phone?

All radio and television transmissions at frequencies above about 30 MHz have been expanding into space for the last hundred years or so, so any ETs within a hundred light years of us already have plenty of material to examine. The rest of the Universe just has to wait a little longer to sample the electromagnetic output of mankind.
