Part of IC 1396 (The Elephant nebula) in white light (UV/IR cut filter)

Recommended Posts

Started off last night wanting to image M16 in white light but the first four subs were criss-crossed with so many sat trails I decided to try elsewhere and settled on IC1396. I've not imaged the Elephant Neb for a long time so it made a nice change.

The details of this image:

Scopes: Askar 120  APO's (x2), Cameras: ASI 2600 MC DUO and ASI2600 MC Pro, Mount iOptron CEM 60,Filters: Astronomic L2 UV/IR cut filters.

N.I.N.A. used for cature and scope control. Two instances used One to control a camera and the telescope/guiding/focuser etc, the second instance to just control the 2nd camera and focuser. A separate guidescope was used (TS 80mm guidescope with ASI120mm camera mounted) PHD2.

46x 300s subs processed in PI. RC Astro BXT and SXT routines used with PixelMath to bring the two image parts back togther again.

Image of M16 showing why I gave up...

Nice image, and nice to see it in broadband so the individual elements really stand out.

With regard to satellites, have you tried stacking in Siril? Other than an ISS flyover, I’ve never ditched any subs with satellite trails in, and they never show up in my images. That’s using it on default settings, but I would get them if stacking with Astap (even playing with various rejections).

Yup. The Sat trails have got worse over time. However I’ve never seen them appear on stacked images. But I get your frustration. Thank Mr. Musk!!!

nice image by the way!

It’s crazy. I showed a friend just how much of the sky is actually exposed and it’s a tiny area as we know. Must be awful there!!! I think in one 240sec exposure I saw three sat trails buzzing through a sub. I guess about a third of an imaging session will have trails in them and it’s getting worse.
