Nexus DSC - Encoder or Cable Problem?

Recommended Posts

Back in 2018 I purchased Sky-Watcher 12" Collapsible.  Then I purchased the Nexus DSC (DSC003) with the Sky-Watcher Kit - 10,000 Step Encoders (ENK003-1).  It worked great.  I have not used it for a while and when I recently tested it, the Azimuth encoder steps are not registering on the Nexus.  The Altitude encoder steps register fine, but the Azimuth encoder just keeps fluctuating between .96 and .93 on the Nexus screen no matter how many times I spin the base.  When I switch the end of the cables (take the 4 Pin connector out of the Altitude encoder and place it in the Azimuth encoder) the steps from Azimuth encoder are suddenly registered and the Altitude encoder steps do not move (except the same fluctuation as above).

I believe that this is a problem with the encoder cable.  I have had telephone plugs and RJ45 ends on cables just go bad in the past.  However, I wanted to see if anyone else had this problem before I drop $60 (the price on Astro Devices website for the RJ22 cable with shipping to the U.S.) on a new cable only to find out that was not the issue.

Sounds like the cable. But examine the 'Nexus end' of the cable for dirt on the recessed gold contacts plus the inside of the Nexus RJ45 socket - are the 8 springy wire contacts looking even and straight?

You buy a crimp tool and a few connectors. It will be cheaper and give you future options too.

Thank you very much for your response and input.  I did use compressed air on the all of the ends and in the Nexus socket, but I did not examine them closely.  I only checked the encoder connections to be sure I had 4 pins instead of 6 in anticipation or ordering new one.  I will check RJ45 end and Nexus socket.  Thank you.
