Roll off roof observatory

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have just built a 3 x 4 metre roll off roof observatory near Port Lincoln. After living all my life 80kms north on a farm and putting up with turbulent seeing conditions, moving next to the sea seems to have paid off with some very good nights of steady seeing .

I designed the observatory and built it in 4 months. The pier goes beneath the ground 1.5 metres, and has 4 x 19mm bolts protruding to hold the EQ mount in place. I am using a 1980s vintage EQ mount at present, but will be taking delivery of a Losmandy Titan this week. That is 13 months after ordering.

The observatory has the eastern and northern walls that can fold down to allow access to low objects. The walls are tek screwed to 50 x 50 x 3 mm galv RHS. The floor is held above the ground on 250mm galv D channel.

Here are some pictures.
