Orion Optics Hilux coating

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I've got to get my primary recovered and am considering a Hilux coating. It's quite a bit more expensive, and I'm not sure I would notice the increased brightness - I think they claim about 20% over standard mirror coatings, or about 0.1 mag (?). What attracts me though is it is supposed to be a bit tougher than standard, maybe lasting 25 years. Anyone got any experience to help me decide?

All advice greatfully received,

Mutley

Hello "Mutley!"

My Orion Optics 8" (f4.5) Europa Newtonian has the "Hi-Lux" coatings, but to tell you the truth (when I did a comparison test between both scopes on the same night) I didn't notice that much difference in brightness between the Orion and my "bog-standard" 8" (f5) Skywatcher Explorer Newt.

There was a difference, but I think it was more to do with the fact that the Orion is an f4.5 scope.

Hope this helps a little!

Regards,
