Oscillatory system

I suddenly realised last night that a newtonian on a equatorial mount like mine is a perfect system for oscillation. A light weight tube with a heavy mirror at one end and a heavy DSLR and finder at the other, pivoted in the middle. It's a classic oscillator.

Indeed. And that's why the mount is so important, especially with long fl, large aperture reflectors.

Agreed, in fact a scope on a mount could be seen as multiple weights attached to lots of springs all resonating at differing frequencies, additional mass in the mount lowers the frequency and may damp the vibration but doesn't stop it. An ideal system is one where one resonance doesn't excite resonance in another component.
