Imaging and seeing

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I have been reading about image scale , seeing and telescope resolution. If the seeing is for example 1.5 arc sec and you have a 8 inch telescope with a resolution of 0.67 arcsec, will the telescope achieve that 0.67 resolution? My guess it cannot, cause the seeing will not allow it to reach it s full potential. And another question: why should I go for a larger telescope above 8 inch diameter if the seeing is a limiting factor? If I can live on top of a mountain I can see the point, but in our backyards why do we get aperture fever?

Aperture does two things. For a given optical quality it increases optical resolution and it collects more light. Only the first of these advantages is negated by bad seeing. The increase in light grasp is unaffected.
