Celestron Cometron Firstscope

Recommended Posts

Hello. I am getting back into astronomy and am curious about the Celestron Cometron Firstscope Telescope. The improved version with the sighting scope and better lenses. Does anyone have one or used it and how do you like it as a beginner telescope? The improved version seems to get good reviews. Thank you. Denny.

Hi Denny, welcome. There's also an Orion version. Both are toy scopes, but they work and you can actually see craters on the Moon with them.

More for kids I'd say, but better than nothing at all.

They use an f/4 spherical primary mirror, so only the very center is of any use at all.  The rest of the field is a distorted mess of spherical aberration.  They're also a royal pain to put on a target due to their short stature and sitting on a table top.  Make sure to get a Newtonian with a parabolic primary.  It's the most important upgrade on a Newt.

You'd be much better off with the SW Heritage 130p.  If you can stretch your budget, the SW Explorer 130PS AZ5 would be much more comfortable to use.
