Can i use my canon 1200d for astrophotography

Hi

i have a canon 1200d should i get reasonable shots of the milky way with a 18-55 lens. Heading to la palma this January so would like to take some landscapes at night. Its 18mp and has iso up to 6400 though i believe 12800 is possible the lowest aperture is f3.6  

any tips. Will be taking small scope so will piggy back on tripod.
