I've been reading on't t'interweb that there is an EQDir Cable that bypasses the handset and goes straight into the control box of the various Synta/Skyscan mounts

I have one that connects to the handset and allows control via PC Direct Mode, again, reading tells me that folks have had problems with lag/intermittent connection.

Would someone be kind enough to confirm that the above link does indeed go direct to the mount (EoS box?) and I could do away with the handset.

Yes you are correct, with this cable and the EQMOD driver you can operate direct from PC and discard the handset...
