Combining rubbish M33 with a better image in GIMP

Recommended Posts

I took my first DSO last night... M33 Triangulum Galaxy.

Datyson T7M in an ST102, untracked. 2s exposures, max gain, live-stacked 7 or 8 in sharpcap, then stacked four of them in DSS and fiddled with it, Exposure/Black in GIMP and cropped off the bits where the stack got progressively darker due to the fov drifting with no tracking.

To compare, I looked at Wikipedia..

I scaled and rotated the two, overlaying mine on top of the Wikipedia image in "Difference" mode to align the stars:

Giving me this:

Then used the "Hard light" mode

Thus turning this:

Into this:

Or soft light:

Just for fun.
