I presume that you are referring to some sort of finder ??

If so the normal method is to do it during the day and aim at an object about 2 miles away - any convenient church spires ?  When I did mine I was lucky to see a "faulty" street light about 1 1/2 miles away that had not switched off and I used that. Church spires, trees etc don't move a lot, but you want something easily defined so maybe not a tree - too many branches. Any signs on a building at the right distance?

You will need around 2 miles to reduce the parallax.

If you use a star then yes they drift and the least drift one is Polaris, it transcribes a small circle around the axis. Still drifts but not apparently as much.
