Another EP dilemma. What size / make?

Recommended Posts

I have a 1200mm and a 600mm scope with 32mm,8mm and 5mm EPs + Barlow.

With my current EP collection I don't have anything covering the X100 zone on the Tal.

If I go for a 12mm I will get the following mags (using the barlow):

mm Tal2M 80ED

32 37.5 18.75

16 75 37.5

12 100 50

8 150 75

6 200 100

5 240 120

4 300 150

2.5 480 240

Or……..

Flog the 32mm and get a 24mm

mm Tal2M 80ED

24 50 25

12 100 50

8 150 75

5 240 120

4 300 150

2.5 480 240

I was initially thinking of the Baader Hyperion in both cases??? (Don't want to spend more than £100, cheaper the better :hello2: )

Any suggestions greatly received.

Cheers

Jon

Hi Rawhead,

the 12 mm looks to suit your collection best. It's always worthwhile having the wide field (32mm) eyepiece for finding and large objects.

Without the 12mm, there's quite a gap there and it does well to give you some options for planetary viewing

Unfortunately there seems to be a bit of a void in cheap 12mm eyepieces, but consider the 12.5mm WO SPL at £69.

Saying all that, a 24mm Hyperion would give you the same TFOV as the 32mm...

Thanks for that Andrew :thumbright:

I would see as much sky with 24mm Hyperion as I currently do with the 32mm?

Do you know how well the Hyperions perform generally with a barlow?

Cheers

I've got a 24mm Tele Vue Panoptic which has the same field of view as the 24mm Hyperion - 68 degrees. Eyepieces with this specification do show the same amount of sky as a 32mm Plossl and at higher magnification which has its advantages in combatting skyglow - the slightly higher magnification tends to darken the background sky.
