Question about EXOS 2 GOTO mount

Recommended Posts

I am looking to buy a telescope soon and was thinking about the Bresser Messier NT-203/1000 on a Bresser EXOS 2 GOTO mount (http://www.astroshop.eu/bresser-telescope-n-203-1000-messier-hexafoc-exos-2-goto/p,14215#tab_bar_0_select)

Now I ended up with a fancy for this setup since it also lets you get a good taste of astrophotography and according to the specifics the mount should hold the weight of the scope (11,2kg) and a camera (Canon 400D : ± 0,5kg).

For me this seems alright but I came across a website (http://www.atelierdumoulindeblande.fr/moulinblande/Montures.html) that says it's only max 9kg it can support... Is this a bit too pessimistic or am I going to have to start from scratch again with finding the perfect setup for me?

Thx for the advice!

As a rough guide, I would recommend no more than two-thirds the maximum payload for astrophotography - so about 9kg in this case makes sense.

A 200mm aperture reflector with a 1000mm focal length is a very big telescope to use for imaging, and is not really necessary. I'm pretty sure you will be seriously under-mounted with the Exos-2.

The smaller 150/750 version on the same mount might prove a lot easier! http://www.astroshop.eu/bresser-telescope-n-150-750-messier-hexafoc-exos-2-goto/p,20905#tab_bar_1_select

In another recent thread, Brantuk recommended the NEQ6 or AZEQ6 for a 200mm reflector to use for astrophotography - both are considerably more expensive than the EQ6 I'm afraid. The Meade mount looks to be broadly similar to the Bresser, perhaps a little sturdier but no big improvement.

The problem of a 200mm reflector is not just weight but also size. Even quite a slight breeze can cause the telescope to vibrate and this is not what you need for imaging.
