Attaching a cam to binoculars

Hi. I have been trying to add a webcam to a pair of binoculars. I have an MS lifecam 1080p webcam and have tried to experiment by offering it up to one of the binocular eyepeices, but all I get is a black retucle with a small observable spot in the middle. Does this sort of thing usually need a spacer adapter or somesuch in order to get a clear picture?
