DSS not loading a file list

I use Deep Sky Stacker 3.3.4 and have gradually got to grips with it and for free, it is a wonderful peice of software.

One thing I can't deal with though is opening an old file list.  If I try to open a list of files from, say, a month ago, although the file list and all the files are present (they haven't moved since the list was created and the path hasn't changed) DSS resolutely refuses to load them.  The file window remains obstinately blank.  Of course the list can be repopulated by hand but it would be nice to solve this issue.

Anyone else encountered it, or better still, solved it?

I am half convinced it is due to the rather unhelpful way DSS manages default directories, alwqys insisting on going to the one last used for darks, flats or bias rather than the one from which the lights were loaded, but if this is the case and it is looking in the wrong directory, I can't see a way to resolve the issue.
