Problem with my 8-24 Celestron zoom?

Hi guys, I recently bought an 8-24 zoom from Celestron. Tried it out first light, but when I tried to zoom on something, the only thing that would change is the darkness of the sky and the FOV; not the object itself. Any help or tips would be welcomed.

What were you trying to zoom in on ?

If the object was a star, then the size would not change. Only resolved objects like nebulae and planets will change size
