Pier Based Alt-Azi Control

Conceptually thinking here, but has anyone designed an Alt-Azi control that is built into the pier, so the mount based controls are no longer need?

For skywatcher mounts, this would have the advantage of doing away with the need to create access for the mount baseplate screw. The design could also be made more robust than the existing Skywatcher control, which would be most beneficial for the Alt adjustment when the mount is fully loaded. I guess if you wanted, you could also put steppers on as well to get fine control.

So, just a thought I had and interested if anyone has gone done this route or what pitfalls may crop up?
