replacing clock drive on old mounth with Stepper Motor

I have an old Meade mount whose 1/15 RPM ac clock motor has given up the ghost..I was thinking of replacing it with a stepper to replace the clock drive and maybe give me some variable in speed for moon or planets.  I was going to use and arduino and motor shield to control the motor. A nice side benefit is that can all run off a battery without an inverter or long extension cord. Has anyone done this yet, I'm sure my idea is not unique..
