CCD Imaging Manufacturers

Something has always made me wonder. I do understand that astronomical CCD's are quite the different animal, but companies like Canon know this as they make a 60Da. Why have we never seen a Canon or Nikon dedicated astro imager? A branch of a hobby is still a part of the tree. Just curious.

To be fair, making a 60A compared to a normal 60 is pretty easy. Just leave out one filter.

Getting into Peltier cooling is a different animal. Plus, it's a very niche hobby. The financials probably just don't add up.

It isn't just the cost if tooling up your production line to make astro cameras. You would also need to set up testing, supply chain, advertising, support, retailers etc. A lot of this will be for a completely different market than Canon is normally in so it will cost a lot more.
