Orion Spaceprobe 3 EQ mount problems.

We bought our son an Orion Spaceprobe 3 EQ scope for his birthday.I assembled it without issue.After getting the scope together, and trying it out,we found that none of the locking screws hold.The mount was also covered in a very stick lubricant, and it's oozing from all the contact points, were the mount rotates.I'm thinking there is to much lubrication in the mount, and it's preventing the locking screws from holding properly.Should I take the time to break down,clean,and regrease the mount?If yes,what lubricant should I use?From what I can tell,this mount has nylon bushings and shims to reduce friction.
