Celestron Asromaster 130EQ

Hi all, this is my first technical post on here. I've upgraded to a Celestron Astromaster 130EQ CG-3 Equatorial mount (non-motorised) and although I'm able to move it and focus it on larger objects such as the moon and for the first time last night Jupiter, I'm having trouble focusing on smaller star formations and objects. Any advice on the initial set up and methods of movement that may make night sky viewing easier.

The 130EQ comes with an extension tube from memory, are you using that? Is the focuser all the way in or all the way out when it is near focus?
