The crater Petavius of 177 km, has a depth of 4,500 meters. At its center presents a complex of several peaks which reach heights of up to 2700 meters. Petavius has a feature that makes it unique: a crack sharp that cuts the crater from the central peak to the southwestern border and other cracks radiating from the central peaks.
Uniforms and dark spots (marked with an x in the photo) are associated with cracks on the north side, and a location near the southern edge that is related to two small domes (domes) marked by a well (indicated by the arrows in the photo). These points are volcanic pyroclastic deposits uniform (gray) and lava flows into the sea? With the sun, the view reveals that these spots are as dark as the lava sea, but the multi-spectral images taken by Clementine fail to show blue color newly deposited material characteristic of the seas and on the other hand, does not show the color red distinguishes pyroclastic deposits.
