USB 3.0 identification?

Hi,

I have a relatively new laptop with 3 USB ports, two of which have SS under the USB symbol. Are these USB 3.0 ports?, and should I be using them when imaging with my planetary camera (Neximage 5).

SS for super speed usb3 yes!

Think the cam is only usb2 spec so wouldn't benefit from usb3 speed.

OK thanks for that. how do you tell if a port is 2.0 then? would it have a symbol?

USB 3.0 ports will be marked blue. If your really not sure you can inspect them closer and see the extra 5 connections they have over a standard 2.0 connection. They are faster connections yes but be aware that with certain cameras, software and cables you could have connection issues. With my rig i have to use a PC or laptop that has USB 2.0 connections. I am running windows 7 pro and use repeater cables because of the long lengths i use. Remember to turn power saving off on the laptop for sometimes it can cause interruptions with the connections as well.

there are known  problems with USB3.0 ports not working right, had trouble with my orion autoguider, had to use my older computer with USB2.0 ports, see where orion has a fix for the problem now.
