ScottM
I saw that there was a thread posted about the discovery of Chariklo's rings, but that wasn't the only major discovery announcement yesterday, and I didn't see a thread about the other one. A team in Chile including Chad Trujillo (who was of course a part of Mike Brown's team) and Scott Sheppard discovered an object with an orbit similar to Sedna's. It actually has a more distant perihelion than Sedna, and it appears to be large enough to qualify for dwarf planet status.http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/27/science/space/a-new-planetoid-reported-in-far-reaches-of-solar-system.html?_r=
iamjulian
Yes, but the really really bit news is that they claim the disturbance in its orbit may be caused by a new planet ten times bigger than the Earth! Plenty more research needed I imagine.
