Upgrading my camera

Morning all, hope Christmas night was as clear for you as it was I.

I'm looking to upgrade my Sony alpha 300 and I've got a good price on a eos 650d waiting for a yes. I know this is going to sound silly but will the jump from 8mp to 18mp be huge in terms of Astro imaging and does anyone has any low light experience. The Sony is bad in low light and I've really struggled to get anything resembling a starry night.

Any tips or advice would be great.

I have a 650D that i bought for mainly daytime use and video recording it also has quite good noise performance and does ok for astrophotograpy this is a quick go at orion from the other day 6 x 20s exposures.

I used deep sky stacker to stack the images i didnt use any darks or flats because i was caught out by the sudden break in the clouds and wanted a few practice shots as it was my 1st go at Orion, i then used photoshop to adjust the levels and a bit of curves.

I was suprised that i got nice nebulosity colour with exposures of 2 seconds during my initial alignment and focus check.

so you set exposure to 2 seconds and how many images do you think you stacked.
