Adjusting Screw / Swarf / 200P

Recommended Posts

There are 3 hex Alan bolts and 3 Phillip's head screws at the back of my telescope (Skyliner 200P/D) the hex bolts are for locking  and the Phillip's  screws are for adjusting . I know they dont need to be very tight, just enough to hold, but  I  noticed a small amount of Swarf appear when adjusting  one of the scews!  [will check the other 2  next time]

More adjustments, more swarf, and possibly the slacker it will get!  Would a light oil have any adverse effects?

Hi Charic, personally I would steer clear.

Although the odds are perhaps fairly small, oil has a habit of spreading and oil + optics don't make happy bedfellows!

I considered various solutions for lubricating a filter thread on an eyepiece adapter a few months back (oil, dry/ptfe based lubricants, graphite from pencil lead) but in the end decided to leave it alone.

Cheers,
