Minimum distance between jupiter and saturn

Recommended Posts

What ever it was, voyager 1 crossed it in about 1 year according ti wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyager_1

The primary mission ended on November 20, 1980, after encountering the Jovian system in 1979 and the Saturnian system in 1980.

Thats a bit like doing the nurburgring in under 1 minute. (top gear test track took 59 seconds in a renault F1 car and that track was VERY short compared to nurburgring).

If you look at the orbit diagram here the path wasn't the shortest distance between the two planets. The increase in speed is due to using Jupiter's gravitational field to "slingshot" the probe to Saturn.
