Seeing comets?

Are the comets like pann starrs as bright as their pictures, or am I looking for a faint fuzzy?

Probably somewhere in between. Bright comets (like C/2011 L4 PANSTARRS) will look very close to the images you see... the tail is often a bit more diffuse mind, so don't expect to see it trailing right across the sky. It is currently JUST visible to the naked eye as a sort of elongated star, but binoculars will give a great view clearly showing a bright core and fairly impressive (if diffuse) tail.
