Hi and welcome to the forum. As to your mystery object - the 10year gap before reporting it doesn't help! As has been quoted it must have been local [within the earth's atmosphere] to 'expand' as reported otherwise if in deep space such expansion would exceed light speed and be impossible. I've seen a head-on meteor decades ago but it didn't get bigger - it was just a point source that got very much brighter. Are you confusing 'brighter' with 'bigger'?

ps: I've also seen a bolide [exploding meteor] that change direction slightly after the explosion - no sound was heard!
