High-res xbox cam -could this work?

Inspired by Cliffs wide field web cam for meteor detection I was thinking of doing something similar. It seems to me though that the problem with using a web cam is the low resolution which means that faint objects could be missed, so I had an idea...

Given that these cameras are cheap (I just bought one on ebay for £3.50) could it be possible to arrange 2 or more cameras on some sort of rig pointing at the same section of sky and superimpose the images to boost the resolution? Has anyone ever tried to do anything like this? Is software available that can superimpose the images from more than one camera (ideally in real time)?

I would be most interested to hear any views on this. If I can find any suitable software I might buy a couple more cameras and give it a go.
