How to modify an Xbox webcam for astro imaging - illustrated guide.

Recommended Posts

Hola,

I'm sure this subject was discussed around here before. But decided to create another thread showing how to do modify the Xbox Live webcam - all illustrated.

In a word:

1- Unscrew/pull out the nose focuser (the grey circle)

2- Open the front cover (You'll require some fiddling, in my experience starting from the bottom was easier)

3 - Disable/remove the green lights (You don't need light aberration spoiling your imaging)

4- Cut the nose of the front cover (I used a little saw, a threaded knife can work just fine)

5- Remove the black lens (twist and pull)

6- Put the front cover back on

7- Screw the webcam adaptor into the hole (I happened to have the webcam nose piece, you might need to push it in a bit while screwing it into the hole )

If you don't have a nose piece (webcam adaptor ), you can always get a 1.25mm tube and glue it on the front cover. I think an eyepiece tube can do just that.

The photos are self-explanatory:
