Polar Alignment

Hi All,Looking at the initial set of an Eq6 and polar alignment and attempting to under stand it !! Can the polar alignment (setting the location,date circle,index marker etc; be set up a few hours before viewing and is it right that the alignment(transit) to be done when ready to view in conjunction with a software named Polar Finder.Ta all.
