they were also easy to spot with the naked eye. I never noticed it before.

I had a similar experience with the Orion Nebula. It's in plain sight if you know what to look for, but it wasn't until i put it to my 105mm nikon lens that I realised its a colored smudge, not a fuzzy star :)
