steve_
Hi AllThe other night I had a go at capturing the spectra of Alberio with the star analyser and my 80 ED. I processed in Vspec using the following workflow;calibrate> normalise> instrument calibration> extinction. Is this the standard way to proceed? I also wondered if it is ok to run the high pass filter in photoshop on the synthesized spectrum to emphasize the lines or is this not really good practice.I hope you can help. Many thanksSteve. jsandse
Hi Steve, using high pass filters in photoshop is something I would keep well clear of - they will only corrupt the data you have collected. There are well documented step by step pipelines for processing star analyser spectra. I wouldn't try and create one yourself. You could try the pipeline in Christian Buil's ISIS software. Robin Leadbetter translated the instructions into English from French. This is a tried and tested pipeline and you just have to copy the steps.Links to the software and the documentation for the pipeline are here:http://www.astrosurf.com/buil/isis/quicksa/tuto_en.htmhttp://www.astrosurf.com/buil/isis/isis_en.htmThere are other software such as spcaudace and loads of others you could also use but the ISIS for the star analyser looks very well documented.Note that ISIS has the advantage over vspec that if you have several images you want to combine you can do this in ISIS you can't do that in VSpecAlso ISIS has an expert mode which allows you to use flats, darks and bias frames in your pipeline to get scientifically valid data. Out of interest some albireo spectra taken by the star analyzer are on the rspec website here:http://www.rspec-explorer.com/dslr/cheersJohn
steve_
Hi John Many thanks for your great advice. I've taken it on board and followed the documented procedures for producing a calibrated spectrum. I'm so pleased as I've been able to perform some of the calculations (Planck curve etc) and got some pretty decent results. So thanks again! All the best.Steve.
